The Ellis to Open in October

Septmber 2007

The Ellis to Open on October1, 2007

RD Management LLC has nearly completed the $26.8 million historic rehabilitation of The Ellis, a highly anticipated classically stylized boutique hotel in the space that was formerly the Winecoff Hotel, with completion set for October 1. When it opens, The Ellis will feature 15-stories, 127 rooms, a fitness center, a business center and two meeting rooms. The entire second floor provides a unique food and beverage setting with a lounge, patio and air terrace restaurant called the E Street Grill.  Located at 176 Peachtree Street, across from the Ritz-Carlton, Downtown, the hotel will be within walking distance to area attractions like the World of Coke, The Georgia Aquarium, the proposed Center for Civil and Human Rights, CNN Center and more.

The Ellis has a storied past and today tells the story of a new day for downtown.  RD Management LLC purchased the building for $2.2 million in 2000 and embarked on an extensive historic rehabilitation.  Prior to that, it stood vacant for decades as the city rapidly built up around it.

The building was erected in 1913, named for builder William Fleming Winecoff, the original hotel owner prior to the fire, who, lived and died in it.  It was designed by William Lee Stoddart on the highest elevation of Peachtree Street, which, at the time was the pinnacle of the city.  The Winecoff dwarfed the other buildings around it, and therefore was touted as the tallest and most luxurious hotel in Atlanta. In 1946, it was the scene of the largest and deadliest hotel fire in history, which spurred Congress to enact fire safety legislation. Rebuilt, the Winecoff never regained its original splendor.  The fire remained its legacy and for years the hotel stayed shuttered, until now.
