February 27, 2007 Courtland Street Traffic Congestion. The intersection of Courtland Street and Baker Street is impacted currently due to the lane closures on Courtland St. to allow for the placement of the construction crane. Public Works Traffic and Transportation Department has been working with the contractor to make provisions to minimize the impact to traffic. One lane of Courtland St. approaching the intersection of Courtland St. and Baker St. is being taken to provide for a two lane diversion on the Southbound Courtland St. exit from the Downtown Connector in an attempt to minimize back-up of traffic exiting the connector. This also allows for the traffic to safely maneuver around the crane. There is a police officer provided by the contractor on site to assist with traffic to facilitate traffic efficiency and safety under these circumstances. There are barricades around the crane to alert and protect drivers. These barricades are moved during rush hours and at night to facilitate traffic. There is only supposed to be one lane blocked during the rush hours and evening hours, but the size of the crane inhibits full use of the second lane. So please use caution in this area. This project phase will be in effect until mid to late March 2007. We would ask that you use alternate exits to reach your destination when possible. The City will provide more information and recommendations as available. The Baker St. Phase of this project is not due to commence until June. A stakeholder group is involved in the planning and coordination. The City is currently working with the contractor to reconfigure traffic during that 6-month phase as well. We ask your indulgence during this construction, as this is a very important project and investment by Marriot Marquis for Downtown Atlanta.
